The advocate who has lived what his clients live
Jason Turkish has been legally blind since birth. It is the first fact of his biography because it is the first fact of his practice: the barriers his clients face are barriers he has navigated his whole life. Source ABA Journal
Northwestern, cum laude — and an externship that mattered
Jason earned his B.A. in political science at the University of Michigan and his J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern's law school in 2012 — the official State Bar of Michigan record carries the honors line. Source State Bar of Michigan
Along the way he externed under Richard Bernstein — the blind attorney who went on to become a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. The lesson stuck: blindness and a courtroom career are not in tension. Source Nyman Turkish PC
Leading the firm
Today Jason is the President and Managing Partner of Nyman Turkish PC, the nationwide Social Security Disability firm founded in 1980. Much of his work is exactly what the firm was built for: standing up for people who were turned down for benefits and helping them get a fairer hearing. Source The Baltimore Sun
And when a rule shuts disabled people out — a bar exam, a ballot, a wrestling mat, an airport curb — he takes that fight to court. That record has its own page: read the cases.
Trusted with the profession's own discipline
The Michigan Supreme Court appointed Jason to the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board — the body that hears misconduct cases against Michigan lawyers. His current term runs through September 30, 2027. It is a distinctive kind of trust: the state's highest court asking a practicing attorney to help police the profession itself. Source Attorney Discipline Board
A national advocate for Social Security
Jason co-founded the Alliance for America's Promise, a Social Security disability rights group, and serves as a director. In November 2025, ProPublica reported how advocacy he led — including meetings with the White House and the Commissioner of Social Security — preceded the administration abandoning a planned cut to disability benefits for older workers. He has made the public case in his own byline, too — including a guest commentary on the Social Security Administration in The Baltimore Sun. Source The Baltimore Sun
